“Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System” featured on National Radio Show

The Nationally Syndicated radio show, “Homeland Security Inside and Out” recently featured Anthony M. Davis‘ new book, “Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System.”

According to Davis, the Maritime Transportation System encompasses more than just our boats and coasts; it includes our roads, rails, pipelines, locks, dams, rivers and bridges. One thing interacts with the other. You shut down one thing and you impact the flow of cargo…then you impact the nations’ economy.”

The radio show continued with a discussion of issues related to tracking small boats within the US. According to Davis, the International Association of Marine Investigators (IAMI) has been pursuing the standardization of Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) for years in a similar way to Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN). Doing so assists law enforcement when vessels are stolen and provides a key evidence trail after a marine-related attack.

When shifting to questions of a national maritime security posture, Davis stated People need to identify the fact that they are players in our homeland security.” He described how as Chief of Intelligence with the Coast Guard in Mobile, AL, he utilized the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The common citizen out there, they know the area, they know the waterways, they know when something is awry and they can report it” he said. The interview finished up with priorities for homeland security. (This interview began at timestamp 19:56.)
